The film tells the story of Adèle (played by Adèle Exarchopoulos), a shy and introverted 15-year-old girl who is struggling to find her place in the world. One day, she meets Emma (played by Léa Seydoux), a free-spirited and charismatic older woman who awakens Adèle's desire and sets her on a journey of self-discovery.
