After the release of "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" in 1987, Pink Floyd embarked on a successful tour, but the band members began to drift apart. The guitarist David Gilmour and the drummer Nick Mason started working on new material, while the bassist Roger Waters continued to work on his solo projects. Although Waters was not directly involved in the album's creation, his influence can still be felt throughout.
