The movie takes place a year after Batman's debut as a crimefighter. Gotham City is facing a new threat in the form of the Joker, a chaotic and anarchic mastermind played by Heath Ledger. The Joker wreaks havoc on the city, committing crimes and pushing Batman to his limits. Meanwhile, Batman must also contend with the corrupt and self-serving Gotham City District Attorney, Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), who becomes the two-face villain Two-Face.
